The cost of your blinds or shades may vary depending on several factors:
1) Where you buy them from:
Online – No service – low price – may carry lower price/lower quality products, warranty?
Big Box Store – Limited service – low price – often have high employee turnovers and employees may not be as knowledgeable as a window covering designer.
Dedicated Window Covering Retailer - In-Home measuring and design service, should guarantee they fit properly. Employees are usually very knowledgeable and often have Interior Design experience. Offers installation services. More expensive but you get design help, measurement guarantee and installation.
2) Brand, Quality and Warranty:
There are many brands of window coverings on the market these days and just because it is a well known brand does not mean that you are getting the best quality. Some brands have their standard high quality line and then also carry a budget line. So which are you getting? Have you seen a sample? What is the Warranty and what does it cover? You may think you are getting a really good deal and then find out two years later when something breaks that you only had a one year warranty. If you had paid a little more you may have gotten a lifetime warranty and the broken shade replace or at least the part sent to you to fix it if it is an easy fix.
Warranty Example: Graber Limited Lifetime Warranty
Graber has a very good warranty and they stand behind their product. When there is an issue with a shade that is not working they will either send me a part and instructions (if it's an easy fix) or more often, just send me a new replacement shade, all at no cost to me or my customer.
What's Not Covered:
3) Rebates & Promotions
You can save lots of money by being aware of the manufacturer's rebates and promotions. For instance, Graber offers one or two promotions every 2 to 3 months. They often offer a free upgrade to cordless controls which is approximately a $55 value per shade. If you have 8 shades that will save you $440. To find these promotions either watch the manufacturer's website or check with your local window covering retailer to find out what the current promotions are.
for one 48" wide x 60" long shade or blind with standard cord controls. Price for each style of shade varies with the fabric selection so you will see a price range. There are various options which I will not include in this such as control options, linings and valances.
My business: The Shade Designer/Island Shades
My business falls into the last category above since I am an independent Interior Designer and Window Covering Specialist. I am a very small business in a small community and I do not buy the quantity of product that other larger companies do. That means that my cost is higher. I can offset that somewhat by having a low operating cost. I only pay myself, I don't have to pay commission to an employee and I work from home. And I do my best to keep my prices competitive in comparison with other retailers. What you get from me is personal service in your home, years of experience as an Interior Designer and fair and honest pricing. I come out to measure, help you with design, colors, style and explain the pros and cons of various window coverings. I have recently added custom draperies, roman shades and top treatments to the list of products that I offer and plan to offer online design help in the near future.

Cellular Shades are one of the most popular styles of shades that I sell, however, if you are looking for a little more color and texture than the cellular shades offer, then Pleated Shades might be just what you are looking for. The 3 main differences between Cellular and Pleated shades are size limitations, cord visibility and fabric style and textures.
